When Lail Arad sent us a twitter message some weeks ago about her lovely song “Everyone Is Moving To Berlin” we thought it was a great coincidence. Little did we know that our friend Edial had tipped her off to our project. Lail’s song touches on the ever-growing bohemian spirit amongst the younger international crowd in Berlin, Germany. A popular destination for artists, musicians and designers, the former eastern half of the city is home to many young people from the more pricey capitals of London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. The combination of cheaper rents, plentiful nightlife and possibilities of creative collaborations are the primary draw. This video was shot on the rooftop of SoundCloud, a Berlin-based web startup company run by two cool Swedish guys.

After the concert we retired to a nearby lounge with a group of about 15 people. As we approached a comfortable corner there was a solitary young guy sitting alone in the middle of a comfortable couch writing in a journal. Apparently he had no intention to move seats when we approached and became absorbed by our group. As we shared beers and gazpacho soup, Lail became increasingly curious about the stranger in our midst. Eventually we took bets on what he was doing and she went over to talk with him. It turned out he was a 21-year-old Swiss student on summer holidays in Berlin, and he’d apparently been doodling in a sketchbook, not writing the next great novel.
